xp has a glitch with the media card. check to make sure your media card is updated if not youll get the blue screen of death and it will reboot with no warning. as for your internet, dumb question is your service still hooked up and if you were in a area that got hit by the ice storm its possible the internet is down, also you can get a free avg virus checker it works really well. other then that call to see that your internet didn't get cut or check your splitter you may need a 1g most cable/internet companies use a slower splitter. we used to have slow internet or no internet at all until we replaced the splitter.

1.Download the 30-day trial of System Mechanic, and run it to fix many vital Windows errors. You can get it from
http://iolo.com/sm/7/std/download.aspx
2.You must have an anti-virus, a firewall and at least two firewall on your computer. Regularly update them, and scan your computer for spyware every 4-5 days and for viruses every 9-10 days.
3.If you don't have any or all of these security software, then you can get these free security software:
AVG anti-virus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
(Download this: avg75free_432a904.exe)
Ad-Aware: http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
AVG anti-spyware 7.5 (Download this: avgas-setup-7.5.0.50.exe): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free
Comodo Personal Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
4.Download this free utility and use its 'Cleaner' and 'Issues' sections to get rid of all junk that might have accumulated on your computer:
CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
And you MUST keep this in mind ALWAYS:
Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish.

First step is to boot from a LiveCDrom, and if it comes up, and works, then the trouble is Microsoft, as is most usual.
