[Decapitation by hanging]

[Article in German]

Pankratz H, Schuller E, Josephi E.

This case report describes the most infrequently observed decapitation by the rope in the event of a suicidal hanging. Knowing the length of the drop, it was possible to estimate the loading of the neck of about 13 500 N. This value appears to applicable to indicate the upper limit of tolerance of the neck.

Because Ibrahim was "hefty", it caused more tension on the noose and thereby severing his head. Plus, I just read yahoo news. It is reported that the "measurements in ratio to his weight and length of drop" were miscalculated. Neverthless, isn't it ironic that the man who was responsible for so many of his own citizens to lose their heads had suffered the same fate?

No it isn't. It's quite easy. If they work out the drop wrong, then the full force of the drop can be enough to rip the head off the body. If done correctly, the rope will just snap the neck.

in a word......Yes....
the strain placed on the neck could sever the head if the body was to afll for too long- reaching speed
prevention...............well, the hangman is supposed to insure this does not happen by allowing enough rope to effectively kill the victum so they die from the neck breaking- and not suffocation.
However Saddams' brother DID have cancer....this could have played a roll.
we need to see the video- if it is ever released to see if this happened as they say or if the body was tortured.

no it is not impossible. I believe you have to take into account the weight of the body the way the noose was made and the distance to the ground. Gravity plays a important factor that most things are governed by.

You answered your own question. If Brazan Ibrahim had been severed during the hanging, then of course it is possible.

It would have to include a VERY high drop, and a very stiff rope (that does not stretch), but if someone has a bone deficiency and weak neck muscles, yet is very fat, it's possible.

one of the reasons canadian hangings were put out of the public eye was that at least 2 victims were decapitated and it started a riot.

Hello =)

Evidently, not impossible, no, because obviously, it happened earlier today.........

That is what is referred to as "the abruptly unexpected".....LOL

Although, truly, if the Iraqi Government wishes to prove itself civilized, couldn't they switch to something a little less gruesome as a method of execution.....like lethal injection??

Namaste,

--Tom

It can happen, but this is why we don't hang people in this country. Someone made wrong calculation for drop heights and other things.
