That was part of "Ode On A Distant Prospect of Eton College" by Thomas Gray

Since sorrow never comes too late,
And happiness too swiftly flies.
Thought would destroy their paradise.

I'm sure it's older then that but the first time I recall hearing it was Linkin Park's :One Step Closer".
