No, I don't think so. It's basically just the same thing as changing the old one into the new one, so why would it hurt. Also, one of the only ways it can be damaged is if you touch it but you touch a new one anyways when you put it in and it works. The other reason might be too much sun exposure but why would anyone put it under the sun...so I guess the ink cartridge wasn't hurt (unless you put it under the sun :-)!

Despite the dry humor and attempts above, the answer depends.
If you read your printer's manual (which you can find online if you no longer have the paper copy), it will probably advise against doing this. The reason is because keeping the cartridge in the printer until it's empty allows the printer to clean it often enough so that the ink doesn't dry on the printhead. If left out of the printer for too long, it won't could damage the print head the next time you put it back in.
It used to be that some printers included the print head with each cartridge, which is what made replacements expensive. Now most use a higher-quality print head that is seperate from the cartridge, allowing for cheaper replacements (Canon does this in all models). The downside, as you've already figured out, is that it's easier to ruin especially if you're putting old ink cartridges back in.
So again, the answer depends on your model printer and how long you're leaving them out. If you're not sure, it's best not to try.

The only thing I would worry about is it drying out. It's best to use up the ink and replace both cartridges at a time. They cost so much though, I have saved a color one when I just replaced both black and color, I printed a half ream of text and used all the black with in a couple days. I replaced both, but saved the color in a ziplock baggie with the air sucked out.
