For software, I would recommend download.com. For other things, you may need to look into a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing program like Imesh or Utorrent, both available from download.com. (Mind you, I'm not recommending you download anything copyrighted!)

I do not know which sites you are referring to. But I have never paid a single cent nor have ever given my credit card info to download any free software.

Yes they are all rip offs. Don't buy it and check out http://www.limewire.com

Or some other peer to peer. You download that and do searches for whatever music you want yo can get it free of charge.
