Here is a list of important authors to read. All of thier books are considered "important" or "the best." Why are they the best? Because they changed literature, and thusly the way we read it. Secondly, because all of thier books deal with subjects/themes that can (if you are open to the possibility) change the way you see the world which in turn makes you a more cultured human being. Knowledge is power.

According to the 2002 survey, some 100 authors from 54 countries voted "Don Quixote" by Cervantes as No. 1 in the list of 100 most meaningful books of all time (before this, it said something like '100 great books of all time' but I don't know why it changed) . Therefore, the other 99 English books are also the best to read since they've been widely read and favored by their own literary distinction. However, many titles have long been translated from foreign languages including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Greek, Indian, and Japanese.

The works credited to Shakespeare I consider must reads. Just watching the movies is no substitute. If those are too long, read a sonnet. Chaucer is overrated.
