At grand slams, a male match is in the format of - the best of 5 sets, which means that in order to win it you have to take 3 sets. They use that format to make the game more versatile and exciting, because a player has to stay consistent longer than usual, and it gives more opportunities to get back in the match.
However - in regular tournaments the format is - the best of 3 sets, which means that the player only has to win two sets to win the match.
In women's tennis ALL tennis tournaments, including grand slams, use the - best of 3 sets format. Because women used to play in the beat out of 5 format but complained that it drains them and causes them more injuries since it is a lot more difficult.

Hmm, no I dont think so :( Obviously, the Williamses would tolerate a 5-set match, but just because they are really fit. Out of the top 20 of WTA, I suppose that only 5 or 6 players could stand a 5-set match. And by "standing" I mean just playing. Not even to mention the fact that they cant be consistent through 5 sets, and I'm talking about the top players. Also, it'd be more difficult for the newcomers to get to the top, cause they'd have to beat top players on maybe 5 sets, which is difficult due to their inexperience, and to the other player experience. I think it would actually be boring, most of the womens arent in that mental place to play 5 sets, and top and fit players would thrash them easily. As an example, Sharapova is no. 16, and she cant move very much, especially forward

In Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open), men have to win by three sets to win the match. Usually, in other tournaments, they only have to win two sets to have the match. I think the women's game used to be the same, but it was changed a few years back, so now they only have to win by two sets. Possibly because of how physical it is, when you're out there for 3 hours and more.

In womens tennis you win two sets to win the match. In mens tennis you win three sets to win the match. Why is it that way, I just don't know......
