I think the big turn was in 03 when Pat Gillick left as your GM. He was a very talented GM , and a name people recognize as being such. Your new GM Bill Bavasi just doesnt seem to have the same knowledge and touch as Gillick.

I have to agree with Jay C, the GM is a key component to any winning squad. That fantasy squad back in 2001 was really fun to watch but it wasn't an easy squad to assemble either. Sometimes if your willing to go out and spend a little to get the guys you need, not necessarily the most expensive on the market but the ones that fit your style of play you'll get that chemistry that all managers seek. The 2003 Marlins are a perfect example of a team that didn't need high paid all stars. They played ball the way they knew how and their GM knew that, so did the manager at the time. (McKeon) Seattle will be in rebuild mode for a little while but they'll bounce back.

Don't forget that the Mariners are owned by a Japan based company. Since the club owner is on the other side of the planet, his/their best interests may not be the Seattle Mariners. If they run the Mariners like a business, they might just care about turning a profit, rather than building a contender.

It's simple. The Mariners have multiple owners, which means, different owners with different goals. Ultimately, one of the more common goals is going to making money. This is why we pick up a lot of "home town" guys, guys that have been in Seattle forever and are fan favorites, and have them stay here.
This will just bring in ticket sales, because people don't care about the team they just care about the players they're fans of.
Living in Seattle and going to many games makes you understand. They market the ballpark. They market fan favorite players. They market mediocre players to MAKE them fan favorites. They don't market a winning team. Why after years of retirement to fans still wear Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner, and Dan Wilson shirts and jerseys? It's because they were fan favorites and marketing heavily.
The short version of my tirade is basically this: The Mariners are more concerned about making money than winning.

Bad decisions, bad investments. They look somehow like the Yankees of the 80,s specially after the sign of Beltre (just one good year with the Dodgers) and Sexson (plagued to injuries). A lot of money for those 2 dudes. Ichiro will be boring there. No pitching. How the hell they let go A-rod, Griffey and Johnson when they were in their prime years?
Bad decisions, that´s it.
