Well Chelsea has somewhat of a bad reputation, but that is mostly from years ago. It has, however, gotten better over the past few recent years. It is on the water, so a lot of the city is based around that. There are much nicer cities close by if you are looking for something you could buy a home, or for a family etc. But there are lots of apartments to rent which are nice, and you'll get a good deal. . . .It's close to the city. A lot of new restaurants are opening up there, and it is working up to becoming a nicer place to live than the reputation it still is stuck with!

I don't know what Mike R means in his comment about public transit. Chelsea has plenty of local and express-to-Boston bus service and also frequent train service - a quick 7 minute ride from Chelsea Station to Boston's North Station.
Otherwise Chelsea is an interesting place. Yes, it is rebounding and slowly gentrifying after a few decades of decay, political corruption and actual bankruptcy. And a large section is industrial. Parts of it are beautiful; there are some streets with victorian homes from which are harbor vistas that remind a bit of San Francisco. Chelsea currently has the largest immigrant population of any city or town in Massachusetts, but unfortunately
that has yet to translate (with exception of some wonderful family owned restaurants serving central American cuisines) into the old downtown's becoming a bustling lively marketplace like has happened - say - in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY, or Centre City, L.A., or Jean Talon, Montreal, etc.

Chelsea doesn't have the best reputation and although it is becoming a better area, it's still not what I would consider a "good" area. It's pretty industrial and doesn't have the best public transit options for getting into Boston. Someone mentioned Somerville which I would agree with.

I wouldn't visit chelsea at night, we'll put it that way...
Somerville is a good place to live, as is Medford; Woburn; Cambridge; East Boston (Maverick); Revere; Peabody; and Salem MA.

One of the most boring places on the planet to live in.
You can find a beautiful home there... but then again, theres' nothing to do in Chelsea. Everything is so spread out and far away.

Forget Chelsea...
If you want to live near the city, try Somerville.
