I earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the top university in my state but can't find a damn job. Other than working in restaurant jobs and etc. What can I do to switch careers maybe to eduacation or social work? I don't want to go back to school for more than one year to make the switch. Is there anybody who can relate to this situation?

my daughter did the same--also no work in her field. Except for short term tax jobs. She's been working as a manager at McDonald's for the last 4 year's. She is trying again to find something in accounting. Can't deal with the fast food stuff anymore.

Don't give up on accounting yet. Check out http://www.usajobs.gov/

The government is always looking for accountants. Check also with state and local government offices.

Additionally, it could not hurt you to do job searches in places like Chicago, NYC, Dallas, or other large cities where many big companies have locations. Big companies always need accountants. Also check with the big 4 accounting firms and some small ones as well. With all of your accounting hours you are probably eligible (or close to being so) to sit for the CPA exam and having that will definitely help you.

If you want to go into education, you will have to go back to school for a teaching certificate, which is also a good option for a college graduate.

I don't believe a degree in anything is useless, sooner or later you will get the chance to use it. I can relate to it through our one son. He started feeling depressed because he had all his schooling and started feeling like he wasted a lot of money to not be doing something he had studied for. Education is something no one can ever take away from you. When you least expect it, something will become available for you. In the mean time just get a job doing anything to tide you over till you get the break your looking for. Sometimes a menial job leads you to just what you are looking for.
I always told my kids, "I don't care what you do in life as long as you work and do the job well." We have a trash collector that I truly admire, he is always on a dead run and always happy and will go the whole 9 yards for you. Forget its garbage day and don't have it out, he will run up to your door and ring the doorbell and ask if you forgot to put it out. At Christmas time he gets a heck of a bonus from the whole neighbor hood, everyone loves his attitude and how well he does his job.

If you only want to go back to school for a year I would look at getting a teaching certificate. This would allow you to teach accounting and related topics in high school. Social work would take you probably 2 years.

I think you have to move to a more financially oriented city. I live on long island and everyday in the paper there are at least 5-6 ads looking for accountants.

Where do you live? I hate to say it but your location might be saturated with people interested in that area. Try looking on monster for jobs in different areas. Having a degree in accounting is a good thing. you just gotta look for a different location.

Nothing wrong with an accounting degree. All businesses need accountants.

Get your CPA, and keep looking.
