NO! They have to be inspired to function.

I think a slightly insane genius can do just as well if not better than his junkie counterparts. There are many artists I can think of who didn't have a problem with drug addiction. Painters Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali ("I don't do drugs. I am drugs"), Georgia O'Keefe, singers/songwriters David Byrne, Stevie Wonder. Wow! It's slim pickin's. I'm having a hard time coming up with more.

Not at all. I think the problem is that you hear about a lot of the crazy ones, as they make better stories in the long run. There are a lot of great artists out there now, and in olden times who were quite sane who did great work and lived quite normal lives. You just don't know about them because who wants to read about someone who had a life where they painted, went home to their wife and children and that it was it. Much more interesting to read about Picasso and Van Gogh etc.

No and No. Artists really need to be grounded in their lives, and able to see life going on around them. It is their interpretations of this life that makes a GOOD artist.

haha, no. with madness there is genuis but its a functioning type of madness, leaning more towards the imaginative---, eccentricity.
that is essential to creativity.
addictions are known to "increase' the level of this eccentricity but artists can do without.

unfortunately, there is a lot of artists with a lot of addiction but not everybody who want to be on a stage has that kind of problems...

Yes. Either an addiction, a horrible childhood, or both.
