I checked my oil when I got home tonight. Since it was a little low, I topped it up. When I was putting in the last of the bottle, I thought I saw something. I stuck my finger in the hole and pulled out a shiny, silver, steel ball the size of a BB. It's sitting here on the table.

There was only one. The oil was cold, and not much in the bottle. I was pourung a thin stream. I was watching what I was doing because I don't like spilled oil. The ball is magnetic. The oil was Harley Davidson brand, bought at a local dealer. Not the dealer where I got the bike though.

If the ball is made of steel, you can easily install an Engine Sentry in your oil filter to grab all the remaining parts of it that have gotten scraped off and are running around in your engine - it removes ALL steel, not just down to 2-microns. I use them in every change. Here's the URL: http://enginesentry.com/. Good luck!
(By the way, it sounds like someone might have placed those balls in there. You might want to look into that.)

My guess is that there were more in the can, which were poured in to the engine oil from the can. Even if that didn't happen, it isn't worth taking a chance, as even one such steel ball could do severe damage to your engine. Don't start the engine. Drain and change the oil. It may be a good idea to see if the BB is actually steel by using a magnet - if it will respond to magnetic forces, you may be able to use a magnetic tool retriever to gather any up that are inside your oil tank or crankcase, as the case may be. Frankly, it may be prudent to tear the engine down to ensure that there are no more of those things in there, even if you don't find any in the drained oil or by probing with a magnet. If you do find even one, I think you really have no alternative to an engine teardown to make sure that all of them are eliminated. I suggest that you immediately contact the manufacturer of the oil to apprise them of the situation, and ask for their help (financial) in clearing the matter up.

Why would a "bb" be in an oil "can"? Exactly where is it that I can buy oil in a "can" nowadays? The "bb" is probably from a roller bearing, possibly a main. It's time to do some exploratory surgery dude.
