JR (first answer) is correct. However the earth coping and changing to deal with it does not necessarily involve the human race surviving. I believe the earth will be fine. But if we, the human race, want to be fine also, we need to make some serious changes.

I think that you are right to be sceptical, because I don't think that global warming is a proven fact. Climate change, yes. But, that is not the same thing. Even if you accept that there is global warming, there isn't agreement on what is causing it. There are so many natural possibilities. So, like you I am suspicious about the real motives of the Greens, the Government and others. The issue has been politicised by those with an anti Capitalist agenda, and provides them with a convenient controlling lever.

The problem is when finally there is the sufficient concrete evidence to prove to all sceptics that global warming does exit it will be too late to take any effective measure.

Discussion as to if global warming is real or not is the same as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. We need to take national action now, and more importantly use whatever influence the west has to ensure countries such as China deploy facilities that do less damage to the environment.

Too many people in the west use their scepticism on global warming to justify inconsiderate and selfish lifestyles.

I know changing our lifestyles to reduce the effects of global West arming seams futile, but at an individual level I think it is the best thing we can do. It is a matter of principle.

3 in 1. A fact, political conspiracy and manipulation of facts.

The facts are simple, the planet is warming up and greenhouse gases are increasing. I don't think that's got anything to do with a political conspiracy. But maybe the governments throughout the world are taking advantage of it to raise taxes and fuel cost.
of course it could all be to do with the fact that planet Earth goes through stages like this irrespective of what man is doing. I suggest well all carry on the way we are and see what happens

If it is a political conspiracy ... why? and it isn't the politicians who have raised this issue, it's the scientists. Yes the earth goes through trends but this doesn't necessarily mean we don't have to be worried as I don't believe the earth considers humans when planning it's next 'trend'. If in doubt about global warming, ask a pola bear!

Scientists agree the Earth's climate is being directly affected by human activity, and for many people around the world, these changes are having negative effects. Carbon dioxide levels today are nearly 30 percent higher than they were prior to the start of the Industrial Revolution, based on records extending back 650,000 years.

According to NASA, the polar ice cap is now melting at the rate of 9 percent per decade. Arctic ice thickness has decreased 40 percent since the 1960s. The current pace of sea-level rise is three times the historical rate and appears to be accelerating.

New evidence of the effects climate change is having on the natural world is being researched by scientists all over the world at institutions such as the Earth Institute.

It is as close to fact as science can possibly get in these circumstances.
The evidence of climate change, which is directly relate-able to man's waste is incontrovertible.
However all evidence must be balanced against short and long term weather patterns.
El Nino and La Nina are examples of short term, whilst cyclic 'ice-ages' are more long term. At least for this analysis,
I believe the majority opinion amongst climatologists has already taken these factors into account.
If you ignore both sides with political agendas, the facts by researchers are beyond dispute.
Some of the phenomena can possibly be influenced by weather patterns not yet fully understood. But what is beyond question is that we live in a time of monumental change. This has happened before naturally, but it's effects on man should be left in realms of nightmare.

With the current population and land use, any changes will have significant effect. Civilisations can come and go on the minutest interference.
We have left the safety of more 'primitive' societies, we may have to return there to survive once more.

It should be Man's primary objective in the coming years to learn on masse how to deal with the 'spin' given to us. We are going to need clear facts and strategies.
There has not been a single issue for a decade in which fact has not been drowned out by lies from both sides.

Ok - I think the earth is going through one of it's natural cycles which have happened for millennia. We pollute a lot less now than during the industrial revolution, so I'm not so sure humans are causing so much of an acceleration of the natural warming cycle. Think about it - if global warming were really that much of a reality, wouldn't Bush have to take it seriously? And the Chinese? And wouldn't Blair have to ban air travel? Like he gives a damn .......................so I'm plumping for the political conspiracy personally. Just off to take an unecologically sound LARGE bath ...... cheerio!

Not so long ago, we were warned of a new"ICE AGE" due to arrive in not many years time. Where did it go !!!!!? You can't convince me the Earth's cycle is so short that we have gone from an impending Ice Age to Global warming in such a short time?
It is a conspiracy to get more money from the suckers.

Global warming is junk science perpetuated on us by nit wits like Al Gore and his ilk who want us to ride our bikes to work vs driving our cars and using other forms of fossil fuels. The earth has been going through warming and cooling cycles for thousands of years. These very same fools 15yrs ago were running around like chicken littles preaching global cooling.

Woops I just had a unauthorized gas emission into the atmosphers....I just farted.
