I know there are companies who can coat your house in organophosphates/chlorides but there must be a better and cheaper alternative. All ideas appreciated.

There is no best "do-it-yourself" termite treatment for your house. Those termite treatments they sell at Home Depot or L&G Centers are to treat landscape timbers or stumps, etc. with termites. It only sticks around for 6 months max. Termite exterminators are usually licenced to use restricted chemicals. Some of these chemicals last up to 5 years or more (depending on environmental factors). All the good ones also give you a guarentee. Get an exterminator. Why would you risk a $100,000 investment (or whatever cost) with a $20 treatment.

It really depends on what type of termite, how the place is built, how long they've been there and where you are on the planet. Sometimes it is as simple as taking away their water source. If you're house in one stumps, you can slow subterranean termites by jacking it up and putting metal sheet (banged out old stuff is fine) over the top of the stump so that termites can no longer get through on the inside. This can be added to by letting chickens have free-run underneath and training them to eat termites with some you find in a nearby wood, In any case, more detail is needed.

If the infection is easy to get at, Home Depot or Lowe's carries termite treatments in gallon cans and they can be applied with a brush or a hand pumped spray hose. Do not use a spray gun as the liquid is poison and can cause eye, nose or skin trauma. If you have to remove wall board or the infection is otherwise concealed it is best to have professional repair.
