I think that society or the government believes that 2 people of the same gender who want to marry and have children would somehow mess up the childs life. There are plenty of heterosexual people that mess up their childs life as well but I think that most of the law (in America) is based on Christianity. I see no reason why homosexuals shouldn't get married and raise a child or children together. They provide just as much love and care with probably the only difference being that if they want advice about the opposite sex (e.g. 2 men raising a female daughter) then they would have to have other friends who are female and very close to them to provide their child/children with information.
There seems to be a line draw on what is and isn't acceptable. Just like the double standard between men and women (men sleep around, they are players; women sleep around, they are sluts), there is a double standard between homosexuals and heterosexuals (everyone has the right to be married unless you want to marry someone of the same gender).

You can marry in VT and MA...and many countries of in the world..like Canada
If the place you live does not recognize it.....that is terrible but most people do not need the state to legitimize their life....many straights never marry.....smoke pot......still smoke cigarettes and eat red meat.........
you might consider moving to a place that is more gay friendly
marriage in America is a failed institution, over 50% divorce...would you join another group with a 50% failure rate...buy a car from a manufacture with a 50% failure rate...most would not.......
hope this was helpful

Because America is a Christian nation and in the religion homosexuality is shunned upon. Since theres a separation between state and church the government could never admit that so they say to preserve the sanctity of marriage. which is bs in my head, but what the hell one day it will be legal, it just takes time.

I think gays should be allowed to marry. As for Mark D's answer I only came on yahoo a few months ago & I did not have a clue as to the amount of crap that the GLBT community has to put up with. But I'm glad I saw it because nows the gay people have another person in their corner. The ironic part of it is that it's people of my own faith (Christian) that have led me to want to march & protest for gay rights.

In our case while my significant different and that i tied the knot we saved our very own surnames. it wasn't that we did not decide to alter our names purely that we the two have particularly long surnames and it replace right into slightly puzzling to A. choose who's might desire to circulate first-ie which surname might seem mind-blowing first. B. might our joined call sound mind-blowing, in our case in all probability not. C. might desire to we take each and each others call, by that I propose might desire to I take his or he mine. In our case we could not choose so we chosen to maintain our very own. notwithstanding if I understand that that's conceivable to alter our surnames, if at a leter date we desperate thats what we would have enjoyed to do. I have no close blood kin that would desire to be laid low with a recognition replace so i've got no important reservations, my companions mothers and dads and brothers all settle for me as a member of their kin so have no issues the two way, in an attempt to be honest why project everybody in contact are chuffed. With resect to the regulation and the rights that we've, properly so a techniques as we are conscious we've maximum if not each and all of the of the criminal rights as immediately couples, i'm beneficial somebody will the terrific option me if i'm incorrect on that, yet and this might properly be a important element right here, we did not get married to get the rights or to get what the different man or woman owned, yet because of the fact we adore one yet another and decide to share our lives mutually and surley that's the main severe element, in spite of each and every thing isn't that why all couples get married. i wish that this solutions your question, from one 0.5 of a much better than chuffed married gay couple.

Because it appears people who are shall we say "severe christians" believe that god has placed them as judges, to decide what we as individuals should do in our personal lives. They feel they have the right to throw accusations of "sin" at homosexuals.
I asked a similar question below dealing with the Governements and the christians foothold in them, believing that everyone should believe as they do, and that they believe that their personal beliefs should be legalized.
Personally I could care less if anyone agree's with my life, love or living arrangements, it isn't for them or their "belief system" to choose! I will be judged the same as they will. By God! It isn't my place to agree or disagree with how many children they have, what color they paint their houses, or if they eat meat on fridays.
The Government should also realize that they have their place and it isn't in deciding who has the right to be committed together.
Respect is what it comes down to, I don't care if the government recognizes my companion as a legal companion in their eyes, it isn't up to them to decide!

One thing that's really sad about this question is that the asker doesn't even seem to know the history of how this society has treated us gay people and WHY it treated us that way. It's as if this asker just sprung up out of a cabbage patch and was never taught anything about law and cultural history.

because half the world hates us. wait, more than half.
and because the religious right (in the US) say that gay people want to destroy marriage.
they also say we have an agenda to tuen everyone gay,
normally the agenda is like this though.
wake up.
take shower.
work.
lunch.
work more.
home.
dinner.
do dishes.
sleep.

i have come to the conclusion that my partner ( whoever he may be ) and i will have our own committment to each other.
that way this issue won't bother me.
love is love and just because it is between
those of the same gender,
it is not as though it doesn't exist.
