I believe that external discipline refers to the way people act because of the restrictions imposed by work, family or society in general. People learn that they must act within certain standards in order to be accepted in their social group and family. I believe that that is what is meant by external discipline.

Well, my mind never even went to banking or finance, so maybe I don't know what you mean, but here's what I thought: it's any form of discipline that is not SELF discipline, that is, from within. That would be true whether we were talking about impulse restraint (before the act being considered) or consequence (after ... )

Its a way of punishment by using force such as hitting. I guess this is used in order to intimidate a person so as not to do wrong again.
