The XP operating system is not designed to be a server.

You can only build a "peer to peer" network without a PC that has an actual "Server" operating system.

To have a complete server u have to install a server pack of operating system. But if you want to use win xp as server to share some sources like internet or file sharing, than u need only a peer 2 peer network.

What type of server? Mail, ftp, Web,..? If you want to just share files go to My Network Places and select Tools then Map a Network Drive. Once setup go into My Computer, and do the same. Make sure all computers have "Printer and file sharing" turn on.
