since you dont know what you are doing about 3-4 hours.. if you knew what you were doing about 45 mins max (even with an OHC.. just make sure you know where yer belt/chain is).. head gaskets are cheap.. under $25 if that much... Hard part is getting all the other stuff outta the way.. using the right sealers (copper spray coat is the best i've found) and getting the torque & torque sequence right... Got aluminum heads?? Or block? Better make sure they arent warped.. cuz if they are a new head gasket isnt gonna help... (if you over heated and blew it.. you got more probs than a head gasket)

Depends on engine, if V-8 you need to do both because of pressure problems, also you need to think about the bottom end of the engine. Any mechanic will tell you that just putting a new head gasket is only part of the problem. The head needs to be sent to a machine shop and rebuilt. this will increase engine pressures as well. shortly there after you start having other problems. If at all possible I would put in a rebuilt engine

Which side??? the more junk you have on one side or another the longer it takes just take the stuff off in chunks not by piece meal if yu can. How do yu know you have a head gasket problem?? water in oil, white vapor coming out of yur tail pipe< pressure test and yu can see it bubbling out from the seam of the head to engine crease? bad compression on 1,2 or more cylinders? car runs real bad?? check it out first.

well, im taking it you have the 2.3L. If you did it yourself, your looking about an hour, maybe 2 (if youve never done one before). If you take it in, your looking at least a day, and a cost of $400-$1000 depending where you go.
But since you asked for the cost, im assuming your going to take it in. DO NOT TAKE IT TO THE DEALER! I cannot emphasize this enough to people in answers. They will screw you over every single time. You take it to a dealer, your easily look at 2 days and a cost of $1000+.

oftentimes overheating could reason a head gasket to blow. Warps the seat between the block and the top inflicting combustion chamber gasses to launch, and coolant to leak. conceivable reasons of overheating, plugged radiator, low/no coolant, undesirable thermostat, plugged hoses, etc.

I'd say about four hours. @ roughly $100 per hour plus parts.
