For the same reason we say
Good Afternoon and
Good Evening and
Good Night.
If you don't want to say that, well then go for a simple Hello!
Or simply a big smile :-) and a HI!

Ha ha.. I've always asked myself that same question, but people do it to cheer people up at the beginning of the day... I mean, what other thing could they say besides that or "hello"? But hey, if you want to be creative say something else and see how people react to it.

I know, and half the time it isn't even a good morning but you put on a fake smile and say it anyways. What a stupid saying.

you mean like when it's 12:05 pm? if people say "good morning" to then the thing to do is say "good *afternoon*" back to them very sternly.
