I talk to my daughter, who lives 15 hours away, every other day or so. I let her call me usually, because I'm always home and she knows this, whereas I don't know when she's in or away. It works for us.

I had a mother-in-law who would ring every night at 7 oçlock and talk to my husband for between half an hour to an hour. When I first married I worked. I would come home and cook tea and then clean up and then I wanted to just sit down with my husband and talk about the day, but I couldn't do that as he was always talking to his mother. We lived on the family farm but my in-laws had moved to a nearby town. Most days while I was at work they would visit all day and then my mother-in-law would still ring at night. It caused huge problems for me, not my husband or in-laws. My husband and I have been married for 28 years and my mother-in-law only died last year. I have not had a happy marriage and would have left if I have some means of supporting my children and myself years ago. I very rarely ever ring my children now as I do not want to do to them what my mother-in-law did to me. To answer your question, once or twice a week is fine.
