Islamic state is not same as Islam majority state. The country where Sharia rules the state is an Islamic country. It is against the democratic spirit. Turkey is a secular country. Iraq, Pakistan and Bangladesh are few Islamic states where democracy has never succeeded.

I agree with both previous opinions, democracy in reality is an illusion, how can you have a government chosen by the people, and at the same time it is ruling and controling the people?
Plus, for true democracy you have to have unbiased pure selfless communities,i.e christians are willing to vote for a muslim or a jew or a hindu (and viceversa) if this person is the right candidate regardless of his/her relegion, color, background.
Very Few people can do that, hence democracy fails in reality, and ends up as a mere count of numbers, i.e. if you had a group pf 10 people, and 9 people think that it is ok to jump from the empire state, and 1 disagrees, then democray tells you to jump just coz its the opinion of the majority, regradless of how educated the mass is.
In islamic countries, things get abit trickier, coz in Islam you have what is known as Imama and Shoura. Imama means that 1 person is elected (the imam i.e the leader),and he HAS to be obeyed by all the people, coz he somehow symbolizes God's authority. And Shoura basically says that relegious educated men support the imam , and if he strays they advise him.
The Imam HAS to be male, adult, relegious, ethical. But in ireality, the imama and shoura will oppose elections coz their is the possibility that a female,or a liberal,or a seculist may win, so no elections.
Most masses in relgious societies are controlled by their relegious leaders, hence they become more like mindless cattle, and democracy wouldnt work in such countries (ruled by relgion) coz if someone has an idea that at any level may disagree relegion or may be oppsed by relgious figures, then this person would never vote for such a candidate, regardless if the candidate's idea is logical or not.

The two main reasons why Islamic government is incompatible with democracy should be obvious:
1. the lack of separation of church and state. There has never, to my knowledge, been a democracy where the church has been in charge of government.
2. the lack of separation of powers between the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. In a theocracy, the church is in control of all three, consequently there is not the checks and balances necessary to maintain a democractic system.
If you want to be free, insist on and fight for these two pillars of democracy. Those who say democracy is imperfect are correct, but it is preferable to the alternative.
The person who alludes to Turkey is mistaken: Turkey is a secular, not an Islamic state. A state is not Islamic just because a majority of its population is Islamic.

True democracy requires an informed public on the issues that affect their lives. Most 3rd world countries never had a say in what their govt did or didn't do, so this is new to them. Of course look at our own country, @20% of our population steers our lives because 80% doesn't know the issues or cares.

democracy has failed in every country not just Islamic. America included.it is theoretically impossible to have a government by the people seeing that governments job is to oversee the people. so the very idea of democracy is a failure.

What I've heard about democracy in Islamic countries is this:
One Man, One Vote...One Time.
...because, having used the rules of democracy to vote in your Imam, religious law promptly takes over and leaves no room for argument nor disagreement nor shades of gray with respect to the Imam's opinion, er, I mean, law.

Democracy is by the people, for the people, and of the people.
When democracy is for a certain people, for the good of a few, and for the benefit of a few, then it will have a crippling effect.
