it is getting gas fine and igniting fine. when the fan tries to come on sometimes it comes right on sometimes it makes a rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound like it is trying and then comes on. when it starts making the sound it starts to smell like the heat does the first time you turn it on for the winter please help

Sounds like start capacitor, or motor, or both. You can change the capacitor if you want, (they're cheap), and if that doesn't do it, your not out anything, because most heating pros. will recommend changing the capacitor when you change the motor anyway.

Take a look at the blower in the "squirrel " cage, give it a slight twist, it should turn easily, listen for squeaks also, a bearing might be going. The belt, if it has one may be worn or the adjustment may have inadvertently tightened. Check the adjustment screw. Common maintenance could solve some of these problems.

Sounds and smells like your blower motor is getting ready to quit. That is if you have a direct drive blower motor. If you have a belt driven motor maybe your belt is worn out and slipping. Either way it sounds like you will have to call a service tech to replace the motor or the belt. Good luck!
