5000 lb x 231 ft / 120 sec = 9625 ft-lbs per sec x 1 horsepower/550 ft-lbs per sec = 17.5 horsepower

(This assumes that you mean 5000 pounds of force/weight, not 5000 pounds of mass.)

It takes 17.5 horsepower.

1 horsepower is equal to 33,000 foot-pounds per minute.

Lifting 5000 pounds to a height of 231 feet in 1 minute requires 5000*231 = 1,155,000 foot-pounds of force
Since it will take 2 minutes, it will only require 1155000/2 = 577500 foot-pounds

577500/33000 = 17.5 horsepower

500 lb(force)*1hp/(550ft-lbf)
*231ft/120sec=17.5hp
This uses a conversion of 1 hp = 550 foot-pounds force

Curse you for making me remember that from Thermodynamics : )
