I installed limewire a while back, when it's done automatically by them they can install something to access everything on my computer can't they? I have some things on my computer that I don't know what they are for. I am totally lost. Can anyone tell me what and how I need to sort this mess out.

1) Run spybot and HiJackthis to help eliminate spyware, and run them in Safe Mode (F8 on boot).
2) Goto Add/remove programs, remove what is not needed on your computer
3) Run System Restore. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Pick a date before you installed Limwire.
4) Run an online virus check, Housecall seems to be pretty good.
5) run MSCONFIG from DOS prompt, goto StartUp tab, and uncheck what is not needed there.
6) Backup your data, reinstall XP.
7) install a firewall, hardware or software.
8) get a virus check on everything that comes through Limewire.
I don't get why people still use Limewire...this is the major way to spread trojans.

fairly simple, if this is a newer computer (less than 2 years old) it should be set up to recover back to factory specs by pressing F10 when it first starts (before the XP screen starts) I recommend backing your personal data up to either a CD if you have a cd burner, usually most back up pictures, music and documents, you can also use removable storage such as a thumb drive (usb type) or an external hard drive, unfortunatley you can't back up programs, but more than likely all important programs will be automatically re-installed when you run the F10 restore option, if the computer is older than 2 years and came with restore CDs the same solution applies, if you don't have recovery options, consult a local computer repair shop and consider letting them do it for you, generally a fair price for this service is around $60 - $90 if you are quoted a price that is more keep shopping around, some high schools offer this service for free at thier trade centers (students learn and you save cash). In the long run you will save frustration and sanity by having your computer re-done. and it will run like new, but don't forget to make sure you have all the latest updates (service pack 2 and Defender) from microsoft.

Real geeks run 'Nix. *BSD or GNU/Linux.
Windoze is a gamer toy, not meant nor designed for networking.
All networking ability now in Microsoft came from *BSD.
All MS websites are protected by Akamai leased Linux Servers.
Yahoo runs only FreeBSD.

Ok now for the bad news. Your one spyware scan didn't fid everything. No one program does (yet). Get adaware SE and SPYBOT S&D ad use both of them one after the other. That will get rid of your spyware / adware.
As for the crap on limewire. Yes they can have "trojans" embeddied into them and yes they can then go so far as to take over your computer system, woking in te background so that you don't even know it is there.
I have blogged about this a few times. There is an estimated 65 MILLION computers infected with "rustock" trojan. This program is what sends you all te spam about those penny stock quotes.

RULE #1
If you don't know what it is, DO NOT
DO NOT
DO NOT uninstall or delete it.
There are files on your computer that you will never know what they are, because they are system files, and they keep your computer running properly. They are part of your Operating System, or your Programs or Applications. Do not remove them.
2. If you are going to use LIMEWIRE
you are very likely to get virus attacks
You NEED Avast! and
from what you say above you also need AdAware.
A. Get AVAST
1. Remove the anti-virus program that you have now. It didn't do right did it? Dump it
2. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and delete the anti-virus program you have now,
if you have one;
then use your Search feature, type in the name of your current anti-virus program
if you have one > right click and delete any instance it finds.
3. Get FREE Home version of an excellent anti-virus software = AVAST
http://avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html....
Install > run > do a thorough scan
and allow it to run on your computer all the time.
Whatever it finds > select DELETE
The annual registration and frequent updates are free too.
B. Get free Ad-AWARE spy-removal tool from Lavasoft
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
1. Download, install and run this program weekly or more.
This will repair the problems you have now, and will keep you protected in the future.

Click Start and then Run
in the window type 'msconfig'
This is the programs in windows that are designed to be running at boot and which ones are already running. Look for something really silly on its name and stop it. Deselect so that it won't run on startup and see if that helps.
Good Luck and don't load crappy free software or click on sites you are not fully aware of what they do.
You can remove some programs that are spyware, but others will linger and without their proper files that you may have removed may run partially or broken. They then punish you for trying to remove them and the only way to stop this is to remove them with this tool

P2P programs are a major security threat to your computer system. downloading files and programs from unknown sources is just not a good idea.
one way to protect yourself when you do is to download everything to one directory and make sure you have your virus protection software, etc. include that directory during the scanning process. don't open or run anything until it has been scanned.
you want to run your anti-virus software and spyware programs when running in Safe Mode. this allows those programs full access to many files and executables which may not be available once the system has been booted into normal operation.
