The two boys will face a lot of therapy to have some chance of returning to a "normal" life. The time taken from them being held without their will cannot be given back.

The courts seem to always swing towards protecting the rights of bad guys so along that line of reasoning, I can say yes, you betcha there is a guarantee a fair trial for that man.

As for the boys, they have spent all these years adapting to life as prisoners and captives of this person who possibly have manipulated and brainwashed them to unknown acts or behaviour.

Their psyches will take a longer time to fix, if still fixable. They had been abducted at an age where they are most vulnerable.

He should be killed.
Changed my mind. He should be bobittized, get a sex change and be imprisoned for life

a fair trial is kind of in the eye of the beholder, but it probably will be, more or less. .

obviously hes guilty of *something* -he was caught red-handed, which is rare. they haven't even decided what all to charge him with yet, so its impossible to predict what sentence he'll get. a pretty stiff one, doubtless. and convicts are not known for gentleness with child molesters (a likely charge).

but certainly not death or dismemberment. these are not the acts of a civilized society. such acts would make us no better than the criminal.

the whole concept is of punishment is in fact somewhat questionable. Its certainly does the victims no good, nor the perpetrators, nor possible future victims. in many cases, it only fuels future crime. I call prisons "criminal factories" because they are places where criminals get meaner and learn more technique.
some folks might get some satisfaction out of retribution - a dirty sort of satisfaction - but thats about it. doesn't seem worth it for the price we pay, in my book.

I note the example of the amish after their school massacre. They tore down the place of bloodshed, and all tried very hard to forgive the man as quickly as they could - not so much for his sake, but so they would be clean and not perpetuate the evil.

society unquestionably needs protection in spots, especially children. separation works as a concept, although separation without a serious effort made before release, to change whatever motivated the crime, is probably only delaying the danger, not eliminating it.

the boys will never have an entirely "normal" life (whatever that is) but they might well have a happy one, if the media stops hounding them and they have good counsellng and support.

I think it will be very difficult to find a jury in the St. Louis area. We have all known about the disappearance of Shawn Hornbeck, and there have been numerous vigils held for him while he was missing that were all heavily covered by the media. I think the trial will have to take place elsewhere.

I hope that idiot gets the maximum penalty allowable by law. That man represents the absolute worst of humanity. It is shameful what he put those families through.
