As in a non-hokey production of the Von trapp family's true story? It would be tricky to do but I think it would be very interesting--as long as it's reiterated that it's NOT a remake of the Sound of Music (as in the way the Sound of Music IS) but rather a more true to life interpretation of the Von Trapp family story. You strip all the sing and dance, it could make for a good historical drama. The approach and execution is definitely key and if you can somehow convince the audience to strip any pre-conceived notion that they're watching a new "Sound of Music", the better (and perhaps one way to really drive the point home is to write the script in what the Von Trapps spoke: German).
As far as a director, I'd be interested in what an Austrian director--more familiar with the history of the original Von Trapp family rather than the Hollywood version--would do.
If done right, I would DEFINITELY watch it.

Non-theatrical would mean Made-For-TV or Cable. The story is the true story of the Vonn Trapp Family and how they escaped the war in their country. Now, without those songs or any songs, how could it possible be made 'modern'? It was based on a real family during a real war. You gonna just pretend they're escaping Iraq? That's the only way you could make it 'modern' and I don't think watching an Iraqy family escape would be any fun, but at least we wouldn't have to hear them sing! ;-) And the story is called 'The Sound Of Music' because they were a 'Real Singing Family'!!! A movie without the sound of any music would not be too good for a movie actually called 'The Sound Of Music'. It's like remaking GREASE without the songs! Oh yeah, that's American Pie, I forgot ;-)

not to be mean about this, but when Charlie and the Chocolate Factory came out, they did that. No music, everything was gone.. I think that ruined the movie.
I cant imagine anyone doing the same thing with a musical movie named music.

no, I don't think so. It would be funny remaking the Sound of Music and it not being a musical- or theatrical?! Are you tired?

The Von Trapp children are just snotty-nosed refugees without the music, darling.

no! because then what would be the point of the whole thing? It's music and theatrical performance are what makes the whole thing!

i would see it...it would have to be really historical though.
It should cater to an older/mature demographic.
