Usually darker areolas indicates pregnancy, so the baby can see them when it is time for nursing. I am not really sure about the mucous I thought that was for when you are ovulating to facilitate conception. And right before labor for ease of delivery, if that even exists.

I am a mother of three and pregnant with my fourth.

yes, in fact darkening of the areola(s) is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy, sometimes happening just after conception and before implantation!

About the mucus, well it gets thicker and creamier, rather than watery and clear. Watery and clear is how it is just before ovulation, creamy and thick and opaque is how it is during pregnancy (or any time you are not about to ovulate)

Yes!! You can also get what look like moles growing on and around your aureoles Which eventually fall off after you finish breast feeding), which is something no-one tells you but it happened to me.
This is as common as:
Skin tags,
extra dark colouring skin rashes and allergies around anywhere there is friction like armpits, neck, and groin
extra mucus (nose and cervical)
loosing of all your ligaments and joints because of the hormones
so many things happen that it hard to list here.

Darkening of Areolas:
If you are pregnant, the skin around your nipples may get darker.

Other Explanations: Hormonal imbalance unrelated to pregnancy or may be a leftover effect from a previous pregnancy.

Yes! At least that happened to me on 2 of my 3 pregnancies (about 3 days before missing my period).
Good luck!

your areolas dont start getting dark during pregnancy until you are in your final months--around the last few when the colosturm starts to come in before delivery.

your areolas will darken if you're pregnant. And CM will increase, but not immediately after conception.
