I'm looking for an alternative to London and I was thinking that a smaller, similarly-diverse almost-city such as Wolverhampton could be an option? What's it like to live there? How is the job market and what is the payscale like? How are the schools, nightlife, culture etc? I know about housing is pretty cheap. Thanks!

Coventry is on my list of prospects too so I'd also like answers that would address my questions but about Coventry.

Wolverhampton IS a city. And it's not that bad really. Yes they do speak funny, but so does everyone in the Black Country.
Don't bother with Birmingham, it's just trying to be London nowadays, and it's not even that great.
