Hi Shelly, There are several symbols that could be the one you mean and hundreds of goddesses that are venerated. Many of the goddesses are signified by a symbol like the letter Y or the greek λ (lambda) since these are representative of the Yoni.
If you mean one of the Greek or Roman pagan goddesses you have a large variety of specific symbols to choose from - some like Epona the horse goddess are pretty obvious, as is Diana the huntress or Artemis (a bow or crescent moon), or for Hera the hearth, or for Kore a bowl of grain, each of them had certain symbolic associations which made the symbol easy to relate to the goddesses (although you need to know a little about the specific myths and rituals to guess them, I suppose...)

In Wicca the ritual space is always a circle - one of the oldest symbols for a goddess since it reminds one of the womb, the mother and the timeless and spaceless realm from which all of us emerge into the world - another circle - the earth .

If you are referring to witches as distinguished from Wicca I can make a few suggestions that may be the one you are looking for... perhaps a cross, since it can refer to Hecate goddess of crossroads, or perhaps the star or the asterisk * as a symbol of Nut the Egyptian goddess of the night and the otherworld.

The triple goddess as maiden mother and crone is usually represented as )o( representing the waxing moon, the full moon and the waning moon.

There are many other symbols however so if you want a specific answer you'll need to be more specific about which goddess, and which witch - before anyone may recommend to you which symbol might be the one you seek.

That being said; I'm one of those who've had people in my family called 'witches' for centuries. In my family we were taught to honor all gods but to 'bend the knee to none; neither the ones of heaven nor those of the earth' - consequently - I may not be properly equipped to guess the answer to your riddle beyond this small intuition on my part - I suspect that perhaps the best symbol of a goddess, may be the woman who seeks her.

which goddess? there are about 300 different ones.

the Wiccan Goddess is really a generic Goddess, that is designed to allow you to find your own path and your own patron goddess.

the Wiccan goddess symbol is the center phase of the moon cycle )0( crecent, full, crecent, with both crecent moons facing away from the full. but again this is a generic symbol of faith. each goddess has her own symbols that represent her.

Since there's no one authority for witches, there's no one answer to this. Probably the most common goddess symbol would be the moon. Others include the spiral, the chalice, and the V symbol (the opposite of which, turned upside down, indicates maleness).

I'm thinking, in our modern culture, it has to be American Express Platinum. Whip out one of those economic totems and you'll have the high and low bowing and scraping like the handmaidens of Athena. I've seen it happen. Just my take.
