my husband and i, along with our one year old son, just rented a newly renovated home. the owners used to live there and breed dogs. apparently they kept several in the house and had to remove all carpeting from the entire house due to odor and fleas. they now have laminate flooring throughout. when we first moved in they had mothballs in every room to further "eliminate" pet odor. now the scent of those is fading and all we smell is an awful dog odor. the scent seems to be in the walls also. it is even making our clothes stink !! what can we do to eliminate this without moving out ??

Odoban--It is an amazing cleaner and works well on Pet Odors. At the grooming shop I work at as well as the Vet, we use it to mop, to clean and disinfect kennels, grooming tables, & potty accidents. We even clean the walls with it. It really gets rid of the odors.

Mothballs are highly toxic. Please make sure there aren't any left in the house.

The best thing you can do is get a "stinkfinder." This is a special light you can get at petstores that will make pet stains glow in the dark. That way, you can see if there are still soiled areas on walls, etc. that need to be cleaned. If so, use a heavy duty pet stain cleaner to do so.

If you can't see any stains, it means the smell is likely in the floorboards, under the laminate flooring. There is no way to get that out without overhauling the house, and maybe even redoing some sheetrock.

You may have to fight and get out of your lease.

Daisy, even if the carpet was pulled up and replaced with laminate, if the landlord did not replace the sub floor, there will be urine soaked into the wood and it will smell forever, when it heats up or the room is closed tightly. Demand your money back and find another place, the smell will not leave until the under floor is replaced. Tell your landlord you want money to compensate for trouble and aggravation. If he balks at the idea, turn him into the fair housing/consumer department of your local government, and tell him you will do so!. If he gets testy, contact your local TV station to do a story on the slumlord!

The pet orders have absorbed into the insulation of the house and the wood work. The only way to get rid of the smell is to remove the insulation.

Oder Out or Oder Ban, you might try washing the walls, but I suspect the oder is under the flooring. I would call the landlord and demand your money back. MOVE
