did the characters really become young again or was it just their imagination?? give evidence to support your opinion. also give details that go against your opinion..if there are any. please help n thank u

It was their imagination. They drank the champagne and it caused them to believe there was truth to the experiment. That belief caused them to see themselves as they were in years past. The main paragraph that supports this is towards the end and concludes with

Never was there a livelier picture of youthful rivalship, with bewitching beauty for the prize. Yet, by a strange deception, owing to the duskiness of the chamber, and the antique dresses which they still wore, the tall mirror is said to have reflected the figures of the three old, gray, withered grandsires, ridiculously contending for the skinny ugliness of a shrivelled grandam.

The mirror showed as they really were, but inside they believed themselves to be young.

i cant provide evidence..but i remember reading this and talking about it in english class...and we came to the conclusion that it was imaginary. there isnt one specific place that shows this..just throughout the story....theres little tidbits that hint towrds imagination. try sparknotes.com hope this helps :D
