If it is not written on the outside of the drive itself, you could look it up on the properties of my computer, then from there click the hardware tab, and click device manager. it should be under DVD/CD-rom drive it will say wether it is + or - or both.

Unless you drive is 4+ years old it should be able to use both. The problem is not the +/- but the speed. Check the speed (probably on the front tray) and make sure that it is as fast or faster than the disks you are going to use.

try buying a small amount of both types and one of each. go for the type that works.

Today probably all drives can use both standards.
