Well what kind is it. Dell has a resource for just this occasion.
Anyway if you insist. Run Belarc first and get all the CD Keys that are associated with the software you have on your machine. Note an OEM number is not the same as a 25 digit alpha numeric cd key. www.belarc.com/free_download.html you need a connection to download but not to run so if necessary download it at a friends or somewhere. Print the results. Boot with a Boot disk, with Windows XP you may need to change the way it boots. Press F2 or F12 to change it. In DOS mode run FDisk.exe or Format.exe /C: or if you can boot to windows you can click my computer and right click and click format. It doesn't always work but there it is.
This website has all the info you need to reformat any OS.
http://www.everythingcomputers.com/reformat.htm
Print out the info on your pc os first then reinstall. If your with Dell go to their website and ask about ZZTOP that will take it back to it's out of the box configuration.

Go to Windows Explorer, right click on the C-drive, and select "Format". After you format the drive, you will need to shut it down, insert the boot disk, and then restart it.
If you are trying to scrub data from your hard drive, make sure to delete the files, and then use a shredder program (several are available) to overwrite the drive with non-sense data. Do it 7 times (some programs allow an option to specify the number of times) to get to DOD standards for a clean overwrite. Then start the format process. Formatting the drive alone will not make the data inacessible to those that really want to get to it.

Take your Windows installation disk and put it in the drive. Reboot your machine and hit the boot select key (usually it is F8 or F12). Tell the machine to boot from the CD ROM. Delete the partition. Create a new partition. Format it and reinstall windows. Not a big deal with Windows XP. Sort of a pain in the *** with earlier versions of windows. Buy a book on this from the bookstore.

Start->run->deleteC:\ *.* will wipe out the hard drive for all practical purposes.
There is software available to delete an entire drive's data and overwrite it with several passes using random data.

If it's Windows, just insert the Windows CD, restart, it will boot to OS setup and then just delete the partition that your current OS is on. Format and install
