My lady and I just got a hamster about a 1 1/2 month ago. We've tried our damndest to tame her. We've tried holding her for long periods of time, even letting her urinate and defecate in our hands. We take good care of her, talk to her, make sure she's clean, etc. but she is still terrified of us. Someone puts their hand in her cage and she just becomes startled and runs away. What are we doing wrong?

I'd give it more time.
My son's hamster was the same for about 3 months. She was never handled at the store where we bought her so it took longer to tame her.
I would perservere a bit longer, you are doing things right. She will get used to your scent and your voice.

i have 4 guinea-pigs that i breed and i also look after other peoples when they ask. Guinea-pigs and hamsters are virtually the same and i have encountered this problem over 150 times (thats how many babies ive bread) what your doing at the moment is perfect be afectionate and show her that you love her and dont want to hurt her. what i find is that because they are animals of pray they are extreamly timid and hate being in the open. i would suggest that you cover her cage with anything that still allows air flow but makes her feel safer, a sheet or towel is best. hamsters or guinea-pigs have a very fast heart rate so sudden noises or movement startle them. when your approaching her cage talk to her and let her know that your there this will help (over a period of time)her to become more familliar with being removed from her cage. hamsters and guinea-pigs are very social animals and like to have someone to talk to. when your not there they can become lonely wich makes them depressed causeing them to stop eating. if you got her another hamster friend she would become happier and more sociable. DONT GET A MALE UNLESS YOU WANT BABIES! if you get a male thats able to have babies he will continue to get her pregnant as soon as she finishes giving birth, then you have alot of hamsters on your hands. its best to get a female, NEVER GET 2 MALES THEY WILL FIGHT! sometimes females will fight but very rarely. if you are concerned get a rabit to put with her, they dont fight, she cant fall pregnant, and she wont be as lonely. if you do all that you should be fine. i hope i could help out.

Frist off do not get another hamster because then she will fight with it! Second of all , not all hamsters tame easily. Work with her some more. I must warn you two things, one they can and will bite sometimes, two some hamsters never tame. It is the wild hamster in them and sometimes it is stronger in one and not the rest. Werid huh? I guess you just got a "bad hamster". You did nothing wrong (unless you harmed it, of course). Good luck!

Well, how old is the hamster? I've noticed that the tamest hamsters are the ones that are older and have been handled quite a bit in the pet shop. If she's pretty young, I would keep on doing it. They become calmer with time.

Handle her for SHORT periods several times a day.....too much too soon will frighten her...... she will get used to you, taming pets can take time..... they aren't like dogs that love people from day one......
Handle her close to you (like hold her close to your body) to make her feel safe, make sure the room is quiet - loud tv's, music etc will scare her until she's used to you.....
When you put your hand in her cage do it slowly cuz sudden movements will frighten her.....
Hope I have helped! Good luck! I bet she's cute!!

Maybe you need to get another hamster to hang out with her so she gets used to activity of another being? And just try handling her gently as much as possible. She's bound to get used to it eventually. Maybe she senses your apprehension with her?
