why is cotton used as plugs for glasswares containing culture medium?

becoz its the only thing that can be extracted out easily from a u tube glassware. let say a rubber cork is inserted. how can it be extracted?, anyway inserting things like the rubber cork might hinder air flow while cotton certainly does not
