My son had a higher grade fever several weeks ago and people kept telling me to give him motrin and then tylenol 4 hours later to help lower his fever. So how much can I give him? Is the amount based on his weight?

You really shouldn't give your child motrin. At most, you should give some tylenol because it's easy on their system. I was always sick as a baby and the doctor never wanted me to take any motrin until i was a little older. Stick with the tylenol and put some cold wet rags under the arm pits and behind the ears. You can also have him wrapped up in the blankets to sweat it out. Try to take him to the emergency room if it gets any worse. I hope he feels better.

It's based on weight.

If you bought a brand new box of infants Motrin it'll come with a little syringe to dispense the medicine with. Between 12 and 17 pounds, you use the middle line on the dispenser, and between 18 and 23 pounds, you use the top line. That's 1.25 mL and 1.875 mL.

There is a little chart on the side of the bottle, and on the outside of the package. Make sure not to overmedicate, and doctors say to not mix medicines like that.

My son's been sick, and I've been using the Motrin for the past few days, as Tylenol seems to do nothing for his fever at all. The Motrin also lasts much, much longer than the Tylenol. Lasts 6-8 hours instead of 4. Just make 100% sure you're using INFANT'S motrin. The adult stuff would most likely make him much, much sicker.

Good luck! Hope he feels better.

Yep goes on weight.

11-16 lbs is 1.25ml with the syringe dropper they give you.

17-21 lbs is 1.875ml (full)

22-26 lbs. is 1.875ml + 0.625ml

I would guess he's in one of those three weight groups.

KEEP IN MIND, THAT'S FOR INFANT'S MOTRIN DROPS.

Tylenol should be after 3 hours.. not 4.. then another 3 hours is Motrin and another 3 hours is Tylenol.. etc. That's only if there's a fever that isn't brought down from the Motrin (always give Motrin first.. it's more effective with high fevers than Tylenol).

DON'T try to "sweat the fever out".. it can cause your child to overheat!!! DON'T use COLD rags on him... cool/lukewarm is best.. cold will cause his body to go into shock.

Tylenol is NOT better than Motrin.. Motrin is way more effective on a high fever than Tylenol is and it lasts up to 8 hours.. vs' Tylenol's 4. I have an 18 month old daughter and have been through flu's, cold's and ear infections... I promise you what I'm telling you is accurate!!

PS: Don't just bring your child in to the hospital.. and definately not without giving him anything for a HIGH fever. A really high fever is generally a sign of ear infection or possibly a viral infection ("stomach flu"). Keep his fever down and watch for symptoms.. vomitting, diarrhead, dehydration (#1!), pulling on ears, red ears, discharge.. etc.

Call your doctor in the morning.

If you're unable to bring the fever down THEN go into the ER.. otherwise it's wasting both your time and making your son uncomfortable.

Go by weight, not age. The instructions are on the bottle... I wouldn't use both Tylenol and Motrin at the same time.... ask a doctor.

How should I take Tylenol?

Use Tylenol exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Do not take more of this medication than is recommended. An overdose of acetaminophen can damage your liver or cause death.
Measure liquid medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
If you are treating a child, use a pediatric form of Tylenol. Use only the special dose-measuring dropper or oral syringe that comes with the specific pediatric form you are using. Carefully follow the dosing directions on the medicine label.
You may need to shake the liquid before each use. Follow the directions on the medicine label.
The Tylenol Meltaways chewable tablet must be chewed thoroughly before you swallow it. The tablet will soften in mouth for ease of chewing.
Stop taking Tylenol and call your doctor if:
- you still have a fever after 3 days of use;
- you still have pain after 7 days of use (or 5 days if treating a child);
- you have a skin rash, ongoing headache, or any redness or swelling; or
- if your symptoms get worse, or if you have any new symptoms.
This medication can cause unusual results with certain lab tests for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using Tylenol.
Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
