My boyfriend and I are going to San Francisco for two weekends and one full week. We are going to tour SF and visit friends on the weekends but plan on renting a car and traveling away from the city (North and/or South) for the five week days. Does anyone have any recommendations for cities/locations to visit (other than the obvious Napa Valley), things to do, or places to stay (preferably cute/inexpensive bed and breakfasts). Basically, we have five days away from San Fran--what would be your recommendation for how we spend them? Thanks so much!!

Half Moon Bay. Its a little town about an hour south. Downtown has numerous little restaurants, art galleries, and bed&breakfasts. There are farms around the town and beautiful beaches with amazing views from the cliffs. There is Ritz Carlton on the beach which is a very unique Ritz Carlton,it is very comfortable. If you can't afford that(like most people) there are a lot of bed&breakfasts to choose from.

I like everyone's ideas! Take Highway 1 from San Francisco and drive down the coast stopping at Half Moon Bay and Capitola or Santa Cruz, head down to the Monterey area, stop in Pacific Grove and spend the night there.

properly, the plain element is Napa...you could actual bypass winetasting for the day. consistent with how plenty time you would be keen to spend getting out of city, there are various different thoughts. * previous city Sacramento - prepare museum, lots of historic sites that tell the tale of the Gold Rush and next founding of California as a state. * Marin County - Tiburon and San Rafael are the two exciting, previous shaped cities to bypass to for procuring, eating and water perspectives. once you're up for some thing actual, the Marin Headlands is a huge state park that provides stunning perspectives besides as great hiking and mountain cycling. * highway One - Thechronic South on highway One is honestly appealing. you will discover ocean continually on one section, and the two farms or steep mountains on the different. a million/2 Moon Bay is the 1st "significant" city you will get to. It has particularly some motels, yet would properly be high priced to stay in. Santa Cruz is the subsequent "significant" city...that's plenty inexpensive, and provides many greater vacationer stops, such simply by fact the Santa Cruz sea coast Boardwalk (an entertainment park with California's oldest wood curler coaster), The secret Spot (the place gravity does not shop on with the policies) and Roaring Camp huge timber Railroad (a prepare journey in the process the Sequoia Redwoods). once you're up for going purely a sprint better, you will get to important Sur. in case you finally end up there, confirm to give up for lunch at Nepenthe. you could take a seat in front of a comfortable hearth, or relish a drink on a deck that hangs on the fringe of the cliff, and if seems such as you're floating on the fringe of the earth.

Whale cruiz if the time of year is right.

Take a day on the bay, Alcatraz, Sausalito, or even better Tiburon stay in a hotel downtown and then rent bikes and explore Angel Island.

Obviously I have to say Napa Valley. There's more to do here than just taste wine!

Otherwise I've heard Carmel is an absolutely beautiful town, although highly expensive for anything you want to do.

If you choose Napa Valley, email me and I could try and help on stuff to do and see.

Muir Woods
Santa Cruz/Monterey/Big Sur (You could make this a two- or three-day exploration, as they're all on the coast highway.)
Russian River
