I took my daughter to her first piano lesson the other day, and the music teacher explained to me how to make sure she is playing the notes right when she practiced. He taught me about the whole note and the half note. I am pretty sure that he said a half note is played for a count of 2 two times (ding-1-2-ding-1-2) and the whole note was played by pushing the ket once and holding it for a count of 4 (ding-1-2-3-4). Can anyone please tell me if I am correct or what I need to change so that I can help her practice and be ready to move on in the next lesson. Thank you.

actually that would not be right in standard 4/4 timing.
the half note would be counted as ding-2-ding-4.(the dings here would replace the 1st and 3rd counts)
and the whole note would be ding-2-3-4.(the ding here would replace only the 1st count.)
the way you put it would have too many beats for one measure.
If you pressed the key and then counted 1-2-3-4 after you pressed it then you would end up with too many counts.

yes, if you have a metronome or if you are just counting then whole notes count as four (1-2-3-4) half notes 2, quater notes 1, and if you need it even though you probly dont considering that was her first lesson then eight notes get 1/2 (so there would be 2 for every quater note) and i dought she will be in sixteenth notes for a long time so i wont tell you.

yep your correct. quarter notes get 1 beat and the are solid black. half notes get 2 beats and those are 1/2 black and white. and whole notes get 4 counts and dont have a stem.

Yes, you are correct...A whole note is held for 4 beats...and a half note is held for 2...

Also, a good way to remember the notes was always Every-Good-Boy-Does-Fine, EGBDF,each line from the bottom up...Between each line, it was FACE...easy enough to remember...

you have it correct.

I know that you said that she is playing piano, but you can go to violinonline.com and click on (violin)basics, from there scroll down and click on rhythm. there are some really helpful pics there.
