You can actually drool when you're awake though too, that's where the expression "Drooling all over him/her" comes from. Drooling usually happens when you are completely distracted with something else. So, when you're not paying attention it just runs down your face making it drooling. The only time you use drool as a noun is when you know that person hadn't meant to do it.
Meanwhile spit is refering to either saliva in your mouth or saliva on the ground or on your face that is a result of spitting. Spitting is when you project saliva out of your mouth instead of letting it just run down your face (aka. drooling). This is usually done because of a bad taste or an excess or saliva in your mouth.
I hope that makes sense... cheers!

I suppose it's because drool runs out of our mouths involuntarily while we sleep. Spit is usually done on purpose. Actually, I have no clue. I haven't ever thought about it quite that way before.

It is not the only time, actually when I go to the dentist and have to have my mouth numbed, it is again called drool! LOL! Yes it is because we have no control over it during these two times, and when we spit, we do....... Yup that is it! Gross though.....

B/c when we sleep we don't spit saliva out, it just sorta dribbles out. When we intentionally spit we force it out. Either way they are both forms of saliva, not spit or drool.
