Talent? I think that most people don't want to do it and they can't because they still have a brain from not smoking crack. Axe yourself this, the lyrics I can understand I don't like, rape?, drugs?, gangs?, cap/guns?, violence and death?
And you wonder why the negativity..Mmmmm?

Music is a way of channeling emotion and that's why a lot of rappers use such explicit lyrics. If you grew up ina neighborhood where there's a constant threat of getting shot and there's human trafficing everywhere, you're naturally gonna produce lyrics that reflect what you know of. Many people enjoy the technical side of rap. It takes a genious to create some of the rhythm and lyrics that some rappers can produce. Rap seems to have a flow that rock doesn't focus on. I do agree that it promotes some disgusting stuff, but for some people who have disgusting stuff happen in their life, it's all they know and they refuse to go against what they've been taught from an early age. The bad moral values taught in rap music can be found from the places the rapper has come from. Other than that, most young people listen to it because it has a certain 'cool' factor. This is when kids feed off of what they think is 'cool' and other kids copy it.

Before getting into specifics, I'd just like to say that for the most part, people like hip hop/rap for the same reasons people like rock, jazz, country, etc. Either A) they can relate to it, B) it makes them feel good, C) they can dance to it, or D) all of the above. Now, as for the second part of your question...
As for why a lot of rap music (specifically, mainstream rap) is so negative, the answer's easy: because that's the kind of rap music that makes the most money for the industry right now. I'm sure you've noticed even in other genres besides rap/hip hop music that most of these record companies have devolved into nothing more than money-grubbing corporations. They're not interested in creating legends with long careers or nurturing their artists anymore, they just want whatever will make them a quick buck. And what's always guaranteed to make big bucks? Sex, drugs, violence, misogyny, etc. In a word, controversy. They saw that the more negative aspects of the music resulted in more record sales (a sad reflection of our present society), so they took it and ran with it, shoving it in our faces and filling our ears with it every chance they get. So what do they do next? They condition the masses and flood the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to hip hop artists with actual talent, variety and substance (you do realize the term "tastemaker" is used very often in the music industry, right?). That's what the real problem is.
However, you might be surprised to hear that even now, there are still some hip hop artists out there who have positive things to say, don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than sex, drugs, money and murder. For example...
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)
If you want to hear something different than what's in the mainstream, go ahead and give some of those artists a listen. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Music is supposed to inspire people. If singing songs about hoes and bitches, packing your strap, and busting caps in the ****** all in very poor english.......these inspired people must love the voilent corrupt gangsta life. These guys also glorify drugs as well. These Rappers are a very bad influence on young black children who need someone to look up too. Here are some examples from a Snoop Dogg song "For All My ****** and Bitches":
So all my bitches and my ****** and my ****** and my bitches Wave your motherfuckin hands in the air
And my cousin Snoop packs well, you know what I mean And it don't take much, for the Dogg Pound to bust a cap
I packs a strap, like that, I kicks it like this
Now how many bitches must get dick?
You're headed my way, ***** you best to hit a U-turn quick So what's happenin? I'm cappin **** up like a Western flick The kinpin of the clique, top notch 17 shot Glock ******, so all ***** drop
The run of the mill fool get broke off for tryin to serve the best Kurupt's era, peep the terror, cuz it's a murder fest I smoke chronic everyday
They can't **** with or see me I'm mass murderin
Throw your guns in the motherfuckin air, we don't care
So right now some of you may be in your early 20's and like going to these clubs that blast this crap. You probably dance to it and think it is great. Like Dave Chappel said, if the lyrics were saying "slap her with your dick slap her with your dick,,,, **** her in the ear, **** her in the ear" some girls would still be dancing to it loving it. But when you grow up and have children of your own, trust me you will not wan't your kids listening to and being influenced by this garbage.

still trying to figure that one out.
and what's wrong with metal? obviously you are not educated enough to make a statement like that. not all metal focuses on negativity. listen to the lyrics of Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris write about literary characters and epics such the rime of the ancient mariner (written by samuel taylor coleridge).
Shadows Fall writes about balancing your life. Hatebreed writes about fighting to be yourself in a world that demands conformity.
don't be ignorant and base your opinion on what you don't know

I like listening to pretty much every kind of music including rap and rock. The only thing i don't listen to is music where the singer screams because i would say that it's just noise. I think some people just enjoy different types of music when they're in different moods. That's me anyway.

Rapping is something that started way back in the days when rap was on positivity. Since the late 80's rap has turned into a thug nation of ex-cons,gang-bangers and dope dealers.Every rapper who doesn't consider his self a gangster of some sort is not well recognized. There are still some positive rappers out today: Outkast are one of my favorite rap groups,or you can go old school and listen to Doug e Fresh,Slick Rick, BizMarkie ,etc.
