Are there some people that really need it and if so who would they be? How would we know them? What about them would be different? Why are drugs the best treatment for them?

I personally dislike pshychiatry and see it as a hodgpodge of under-researched data being treated as medicine therefore infalliable trust in the field. It is similair to "leaching and letting the bad blood out" as was in early medicine. I think the meds often do more damage than good and the proof of this is whisped out the door by a mysterious group. Psychology is primitive but making headway and worth more attention than we give it, the same with sociology.
Most of the ailments for todays society are simply a person needing attention from a well person, to be be-friended, even love.. Another problem is the competitive society and capitalistic goals that crush the majority to lift a few.

I think psychiatry is necessary. Sometimes, the reason for the person's mental illness is contributed due to chemical imbalance in the brain and they need medication to normalize/stabilize the chemicals. However, I think it's crucial that psychiatry medication be paired with counseling to help the patient lead a productive life. Medicine can make a big impact, and the person need to come to terms with the fact that they may be on the medication for life, and counseling is needed to help them deal with that. As far as how you know whether someone needs psych medication, well, that's determined by a psychiatrist. They have the training to make that assessment. If you feel that someone in your life may need a psychiatric evaluation, make an appointment with a Psychiatrist. If their issues is really due to chemical imbalance in the brain or other biological disorder, then medicine is necessary to correct the situation.

Psychiatry is very necessary for people that experience BiPolar disorder or schizophrenia. Both require drugs for stabilization. Unfortunately in the case of schizophrenia, most will never function well. They are the easiest to spot, because they do not have a grasp on reality. They may talk to people/things that are not there. And worse, if they are paranoid, they may think that they/you are out to get them - no, they will know it!!

Those with BiPolar can function if they remain on their medication (sometimes they feel so good in a manic stage that they will stop taking their meds, or they may like the manic phase and crave it and will stop the Rx). Physically, both look like you and me, but chemically they are out of balance.

I think that there are definitely people that need it.
People that can't cope with the mental problems that they have on their own.
Everyone is different. Drugs are not always the best treament for everyone. There are some who don't need any at all with therapy being the major part of their treatment. And some who need the combanation of therapy and drugs.

Psychiatry is there to help people with their problems and issues in life , with their mental suffering.

People needing psychiatric help will display symptoms and will seek help of their own accord or be referred.
