I have a 1991 Mercury Topaz that has been setting for about 5 months because of a cracked radiator. We put a new radiator in and now it won't start. The battery that was in it was brand new but now is so dead that we cannot charge it, we had to replace it with another. The car is now turning over and sounds as if it wants to start, but no luck. It has a litte under a quarter tank of gas. It also got pretty darn hot before we parked it. I would greatly appreciate any opinions on this matter. Thanks!

The gas in the fuel system is stale. Try filling the tank.

It should at least fire up, even if it was overheated when you parked it. Spray some starting fluid into the air intake and try starting it again. If it fires off, then you know it's a fuel related problem. If not, you know it's spark-related.

Starting fluid is not a good continuous use item, but it sure is a good quick redneck diagnostic tool.

Twice I've done the same thing you have only to find out I didn't have enough fuel in the tank. No matter what the gauge said, it happened to me twice and I felt pretty stupid when somebody else poured 2 gallons in the tank and the car fired off.

Also had rats chew through my wiring harness after the F350 sat for a couple months.

Hope this helps.

OH BOY Check for spark. Pull a plug wire, stick a screwdriver ( pointy end ) in BE SURE IT HAS A PLASTIC HANDEL and ground the metal part on the engine and look for a spark. If you got spark check for fuel. start with the fuel filter. Change it. If the old fuel looks dirty that could be you problem. Also check the fuses. It could be your fuel pump is not getting power. If everything points to the fuel pump, with the key on tap the fuel pump and lissen for it to work. A short whorling sound is what you want to hear Good luck

I vote for filling the tank. Also might want to put in a bottle of gas line anti-freeze. It helps burn off the moisture that has accumulated.
