I was just watching a game today and thought it quite ridiculous to see an NBA player trying to influence or help the referee. Ball goes out of bounds and some bonehead player points in his direction like the referee's going to be, "Thanks for the help, I really wasn't paying attention!" Same thing goes with players arguing calls with the referees. How often does that help?

I was a ref for youth soccer. I know it's a very different venue than NBA, but the same thing was going on. For throw-ins, I usually just handed the ball to whichever player walked over. They were usually honest about it, too.

Like another answerer mentioned, it also helps for unclear calls, and momentary attention lapses. If two players are involved in the ball exiting play, and only one looks confident that his team will take possesion, it's not uncommon to rule in his favor.

I agree he is strict, but you need to be strict. If not a game can get out of control. Now, to be honest, I don't think his suspension should be that long with Timmy D only getting a fine. Cause the fact is I don't believe Timmy D for a sec. Like, many have said Timmy D hates Joe, and I don't put it past him and his teammates to make a story up for their own amusement.

it does help, if the ref is uncertain, then the first thing they see is the 6'10" man pointing in a direction they will go that way

it proally only works about 3% of the time but, for the effort of just putting your arm up, it seems effective
