Well, Moorish or Muslim Spain (Andalusia) actually was one of the most modern counties in Europe at that time! The Muslim empires were right up there with the Chinese as the most advanced counties in the world. Muslim science was unsurpassed and two of the Muslim world's greatest universities were in Spain and both were much more advanced than anything at the time in Christian Europe!

(They were also open to all Christians and Jews from Europe as well, quite tolerant for the times..... In fact almost all subsequent European universities were in fact modeled after those of Andalusia.....)

First, you would have to define the word modern. Second, a thousand years ago there was no country called Spain, it was divided into separate kingdoms and much of the south was controlled by the Moslem Moors. But I think I know what he/she was getting at and they are not completely in left field. A thousand years ago Moslem Spain was almost undoubtedly the most modern part of Europe, far ahead in learning than the rest of the continent. Some historians say the Renaissance in Europe really had its origins in the rebirth of classical learning and intellectual curiosity that came out of the reconquest of Moslem Spain by the Spanish, and the learning it unleashed which had been forgotten since classical times. But the most modern in the world? That is really unanswerable. There were other sophisticated areas outside Europe (the Mayans in the Americas, China, India).

Up to about 1500 and following the Spanish Inquisition, Spain was about the best place in the world. It produced a great amount of literature, art, architecture and possessed men of incredible learning.

But that was up until the years of Ferdinand and Isabella who, after combining all of the provices that make up spain today, chased all of the Moors and Jews out of Spain.

America had been discovered, ships were coming back laden with Gold, but nothing could stop the decline of Spain where it has been now since about 1500.

Spain was the most modern country in Europe a 1000 years ago, but claiming it was the most modern in the world is a bit of a stretch. See spain under the moors at

A thousand years ago, I don't think so. 500 years ago, maybe. After all, Christopher Columbus had just claimed properties in the Americas for Spain and all kinds of brand-new products were being shipped back to the homeland. Not long after that, they had most of South America and a good piece of North America in their grip. I guess she was referring to all those new products and riches as "modern".

Yes it was, (at least the southern Muslim part) or at least as someone else said, "one of..."! And you shouldn't listen to the ignorant who say "no," because they simply know nothing about Muslim history, (or they reject it.)

You teacher needs to go back to school.

You're absolutely right in thinking that this is untrue.

It's an irresponsible statement for a teacher to make.

So the real lesson here - is to question such statements and ask them to support their claims!
