Last week I wrote that my son had the flu, well thank god all the vomiting has stopped. The problem is he still has diarrhea, I have been to the Dr. 2x and he said it can last up to 10 days! YIKES!! We are on day 6, so today he woke up with a REAL REAL bad diaper rash.... I have used creams, patrelium jell and warm baths.... Does anybody have some sort of advice that will help my poor baby who NOW screams everytime is diaper is changed??( who never did before) He is 8 months old and has NEVER NEVER had a diaper rash, so thank god for that, this far!!

He also will not eat bannans, apples, or rice ceral for the BRAT DIET, he only wants his bottle, and now will not drink the pedialyte.... only wants his formula so I cant even work on harding his poo!!!

Thanks for ANY HELP I CAN GET!!!!!

First off, never mix baby powder and baby oil. It causes very small nearly invisible cuts on baby skin. Just add urine, and that is a bad combo. The very best thing you can use is cornstarch. By the way, 10 days is too long for a baby to have diareah. In most circumstances, I woul say NEVER EVER bottlefeed cereal, but in this case, if you could trick him into drinking banana cereal with his formula that would be great! Do it in the morning and afternoon, but not night so that you can be sure he doesn't choke. If you cannot get him hydrated with water and electrolytes, I would suggest finding a doctor that will admit your son into the hospital ASAP and get his little body on some IV fluids. Not to scare you but it is important. 10 days is tooo long. get a 2nd opinion. Still, cornstarch is the best for diaper rash. Its what my gramma, and probably yours too, used. And its cheap.

Not hardening it isn't a bad thing.. diarrhea is the body's natural response to get rid of an infection. He has the horrible rash because of the acidic diarrhea caused from the virus and it'll continue to be rashed until the acidicness goes away. The only thing that can help is lots of butt soaking in warm baths, CONSTANT diaper changes, and if it all possible.. let the lil guy go air-born (no diaper, no pants, no nothing but fresh air on baby bottom). Think about possibly switching to cloth diapers, too. I know it's gross (especially with the poopies) but I guess a lot has changed now a days with cloth diapers.. maybe they're better now (i've never tried them myself). Last but not least, DON'T USE WIPES!!! If at ALL possible, use a washcloth with warm water ONLY. Wipes are horrible for rashes.. and yes even the "natural" or "fragrance-free" ones). I left a website with some good tips a well.. I used it for my daughter and her rash cleared up quickly!

Give him some time without his diaper on if possible. I know it might be difficult with diarrhea but air would be good for his bottom. Rinse his tush with warm water EVERY changing and do not wipe too hard (ideally don't use wipes, but just rinse him off in the shower or bath... an involved process but gentler on him). If you can just rinse him off and make sure to gently pat him dry and put a really good moisture barrier on before diapering him. A GREAT diaper rash cream is Triple Paste. You should be able to pick some up at a local Walgreens, if there is one in your area. Or you might be able to get some from a Walmart pharmacy. If you can't find that one then I would definitely recommend the Desitin Original Ointment. It's strong in scent but it works wonders on those sore tushies. Be sure to apply it liberally to a dry bottom at every changing.

I hope this helps. Best wishes!

OK i just had this happen to my baby I know how horrible you feel right now.... What I did was call the Dr. and she told me to go out and buy Lotramin cream - it's for athletes foot, i know sounds cooky right?? But it worked pretty darn good.. it cleared it up a lot better than any other diaper stuff I used, and don't clean his bottom with wipes, I'll bet he cries the most when you wipe him with those?? Dr says that it burns babies when they have diaper rashes.. either a warm washcloth or what I did was get a small tub of warm water and a roll of paper towels. But if none of that works call the Dr and he/she should be able to prescribe something for him that will clear it up in just days.. Hope this helps.. Good luck!

Do not use wipes, they will irritate his skin more and more, wash his bottom with warm water under the faucet, it's very quick, I do it all the time. And then after you dry him with a towel, use Aveeno Baby "Diaper Rash Cream". It is really good, it dries the rash very fast and gets rid of the redness. Do not use any additional cream or baby oil. Hope it works. Hang in there..

My son just got over the flu a few weeks ago and got a bad diaper rash.. I let him run around bare bum for a bit so to air it out. Tons of cream during the nights and change him 2-3 times during the night. Just try sugar water on him you should try really hard to not give him formula because it will just make him poo more.

Balmex ..this has to be the best for a baby rash on the market...and I tried them all...my son had to have a colostomy on the day he was born ...when they did the reversal at 8 months old... his bum had never had the experience of a dirty diaper..his skin was not harden up ,so to speak, and we tried every product out there..Balmex cleared him up in no time...also, don't use the baby wipes on him... the oil and perfumes might irritate him more...just use a soapy cloth and a plain wet cloth one to wipe the soap off...than dry him real good before putting the balmex on and diapering him.....

Once your little one gets to feeling more like himself he will start eating like he did before...he has just been through a rough experience.....

probably all the poop. ditch the whipes as they are irritating. let him go diaper-less as much as possible. make sure you pat dry his bum after changes. it also may help if you temporarily put him in a size bigger diaper for the time being, that way, it hangs and the moisture is not directly on his bum. try A&D ointment, or Bag Balm, it promotes healing.(but don't put it on when he is diaperless, just let him have plain old fresh air!) baths may further iratate the rash so avoid them unless they are absolutely nessasary. if the rash does not start to clear up in 3 days, take him to the doctor. it may be yeast and they will need to percribe something.
poor baby. it's so sad when they are sick. i hope he is feeling better soon!

Desitin! Desitin! Desitin

That diaper rash cream did miracles for me. and i've tried 3 to 4 types of creams before, week passed still a rash. Used desitin, dissapeared in a day. You can get the "desitin creamy" that's the one that doesn't have the strong scent to it

good luck
