Did you dance to any popular music back in your day? I'm sure your parents thought the exact same thing if you did. Times change, and so does the type of dancing. If she's 12 or younger I suggest talking about what that type of dancing implies, but if she's older... there's not much you can do. If you punish her, she'll probably grind and worse at the next dance at school or at parties. If you're a women then maybe you can talk to her about how it tends to distastefully displays women as sex objects and can lead to a lack of respect from guys her age... but if you're her father... it's a lot more difficult. Just don't punish her! Please!

You don't say, but I assume that you daughter was moving her hips in a suggestive and sexual way. It is a sad commentary on how far our values have slid into the gutter to read the people who answered that you were in the wrong.
For a punishment I would restrict some privilege she has for a week. You need to sit down with your daughter and talk with her about this. I'm sure most of her girlfriends dance like that so she will have a lot of peer pressure to dance like them.
Let her know that you love her, that your concern is for her welfare, and that you know she will have pressure to disobey you. Explain that this is a constant battle in our present, secular, and sexually permissive society, to hold to right and Godly values despite what people are doing around us.

There is no need to punish your child for dancing!!! Its not like she was listening to some heavy metal crap with lots of swearing and stuff! Shakira is meant for young girls. Was she doing it in public? Was your whole family watching? was she doing it with another boy? NO. Well then there is nothing wrong. I feel very sorry for your child. No wonder kids cant go to there parents when they have a problem. I cant imagine how you would be if she even mentioned the word Sex! You need to loosen up a bit and take a chill pill. Give your daughter a break for gods sake!

Umm why the heck would you punish a child for that??? She did nothing wrong, so she was dancing inside and having some fun by shaking her hips , you act as if she was dancing on a pole.
I think maybe you need to take some parenting classes, if you will punish your child for something as stupid as this I am afraid to ask what other dumb things you have punished her for.

oh geez...yes take a parenting class! you care about your daughter, obviously, but you're being way unfair to her. why punish someone for creative expression? that's what dancing is... plus, i'm fourteen and i love shakira's music; all my friends and peers dance to it. they played 'hips don't lie' in the eighth grade graduation dance party, for crying out loud, which i may say is run by the teachers, and i attended a very good private school in the eigth grade. sheesh...i would understand if she was eleven and stripping to some explicit hip-hop music, but for dancing to something like 'hips don't lie'? that's way too harsh.

I look at these answers and im suprised. Dont listen to the people who think you need "parenting classes". Im only 13 and I can tell you
care about your daughter. Maybe too much though. You seem overprotective of her. You should probably talk to her about it and not really punish her. She'll probably say "its just a dance mom. Gosh." as many other people said. Just dont lose your temper and show that you care about her.

If your afraid of her dancing "sexy" or something make sure she knows the difference from regular dancing to the sexy dancing. Dancing is the best way to get kids up and moving.
