Since algae are included as a kind of protist, this could signal the beginning of the end for ALL sea life - since many creatures depend on them for nourishment.

This would spell disaster for ALL life on planet Earth...

The foundation of the food chain and much of the oxygen-producing capacity of the sea would be gone. Life all over the earth would take a BIG hit.
