My mother was cut vertically with me, but was cut horizontally a few years later with my sister. She said it was how they used to routinely peform c/s in the united states, but it was changed by the time she had her second child. I found this on the net:

Normally, the cut is about 6 to 8 inches and is typically a horizontal cut, though a vertical cut is used in rare cases. The position of the baby and any existing medical conditions - such as premature, abnormally positioned twins - dictate the direction of this cut, Schaaf said.

Where did you heard that? Where do you live!... I am not an expert, but I think maybe that was the case 30 years ago! I was born by a vertical C-sec because that was the only choice my mom had by then. When my younger sis was born (I was 10) my mom was told that she had to go for the vertical C because she already had that done, otherwise it would have been horizontal.
I had my fist child in South America, an emergency C-sec and it was horizontal. My second one was born in Canada with another C-sec.
As far as I know, and with my mother and own experience, horizontal C is preferred, because they don't have to cut a complete set of ab muscles, it's easier and safer for you to sit down after surgery since the stress is less, and also the recovery is faster.

It's easier to get the baby out when you do a vertical cut (much more space). That used to be the common way to do it, but most places switched to the transverse c-section because there's less blood loss and it's easier to repair.. there's also a higher risk of complications with the vertical cut.

a vertical incision on the uterus is way less favored given which you may't grant your next toddler by utilising spontaneous vaginal transport and could do yet another c-section on the subsequent being pregnant. A horizontal incicion or bikini decrease is greater advantageous by way of fact it hides the scar and remains obtainable to have a VBAC or vaginal delivery after cesarean by way of fact the contractions does not influence the suture and reason it to tear not basically like the vertical one...

This is an older technique that's easier for the doctor, but harder on the mother.

Nowadays, in the US, they make a very small horizontal cut just above the pubic line.

it will probably be a little more cosmetic for the mother. That is an interesting question though.
