I understand the USA observes holidays during December and January.

Could you inform me for how many days schools and offices remain closed?

What is the purpose of holidays? Is it due to severe cold?

Thank you.

The official Federal holidays are Christmas (December 25) and New Year's Day (January 1). Many places have reduced attendance between these two days, and on the days just before Christmas. Holidays are more celebration and remembrance than anything else. Severe cold has nothing to do with it, because else when the temperature goes down to -3 degrees Fahrenheit in New York City, they would declare a holiday there.

There is one more holiday - Martin Luther King day - but that comes well after what we refer to as the "holidays".

3 holidays - Christmas, New Years and Martin Luther King, Jr Day.

For Christmas and New Years, almost all businesses are closed, but only for the day (although they ususally close early the day before). On MLK, only government offices are closed. Everyone else works.

The kids get out of school a few days before Christmas and don't go back until after New Years. Some are off for MLK and some have to go to school.

We also have President's Day in Feburuary when government offices are closed and some of the kids are out of school.

Too darn many!!! I'm an American and the Government, Post Office and banks need to be open anytime a hospital is open. We don't get holidays!
