Very well said. Most "rap haters" have no idea what hip hop/rap is and think that it's all the same (bitches, hoes, cars, and all that other stuff). The bad weighs out the good and whatever sells will get signed and that's really sad.

If classic rap were distinguished like classic rock, people probably wouldn't do that. I'm not too much of a fan of rap because all that I've heard is by Nelly and 50 cent like you said. Nailing girls, getting money, running from the cops. Bah.
However, I did look up some lyrics from some of the classics. Some tell a STORY. Wow. Definitely a change from riding dirty and... well, the other one that my brother listens to infinitely.
I say rap sucks because all I hear is the garbage today. No one likes the precursor and foundation of the "garbage" then? Sad.

Firstly, i respect rap and hip hop as music genres. However, i say rap sucks because it is just not to my taste. ANd that has nothing to do with the lyrics and what they may or may not promote. My opinion is based solely on what i think is good music. And to me rap and hip hop don't hit the same notes as classic rock and blues. perhaps i prefer the way other genres flow and focus on both lyrics and music, as opposed to rap which is pretty much a lyrics based genre. I know a lot of people who like rap probably also like the stuff i listen to, but for me it's either one or the other. I think it sucks because it's just people choosing words that rhyme and making an elementary school poem out of it. The real art in rapping is to make up a rap on the spot, and i think that recording takes the art out of it. If i wanted to listen to a rhymer i'd go and buy all of Bruce Springsteen's records, because he probably does it best. I mean, he can rhyme as good as any rapper and his lyrics have more depth. Not to mention his lyrics are supported by decent music.
I do agree however that the role of hip hop and rap has changed over the years. It had a place in the 80's and early 90's. And the artists were putting out some very decent music. But, just as Linkin Park and Good Charlotte have given rock a "bad name" over the past few years, artists such as NElly and 50 cent have done the same for hip hop. And just as i have to deal with the changing face of rock, i guess you will have to deal with the changing face of hip hop. It's never going back to the 80's and 90's with the momentum modern rap has gained. Perhaps if more people say rap sucks we can ditch this new degrading rubbish and get back to the music.
Rap sucks. lol. But hey, you probably think country sucks. Not everyone digs the same stuff as you. The hard bit lies in acceptance.

Well this is a hard question. But I can tell you why some people think rap sucks. The reason being is that it promotes hate, disrespect toward women and violence. Off course many will gasp when they read this and will deny, deny, deny...
But it's true! I listened to many rap songs, and most of them have curses in them, talk about women in a disrespectful way, womens private parts, drugs, violence, guns, and other stuff of this nature.
Some people say that rap is like the story of life. Rappers sing about things that are wrong with the world, how f-ed up life is, etc. Well, I say good for them. But why spill this garbage onto others? It's the same as if I would go and start writing blogs on the net about how f-ed up my life is.
I realize that no one gives a damn, and ppl have their own problems so I keep that to myself.
Please note, that the above is IMO and not any kind of facts set in stone. The Op wanted an answer, and this is one of the answers he/she is going to get.
Rap is off course not all bad. I'm sure there is rap that doesnt promote anything bad, but I never heared a single pience like that. However I heared many "bad" pieces.
So there you go. This is one of the reasons why some people criticize rap.

Dude, I completely believe you. the position are the artists who raised hip hop right into a real paintings form, like Tupac, Lauren Hill, Dre, Wyclef Jean? men like those are those that favor to characterize rap. no longer only a collection of senseless beats and talking like it truly is on the prompt, the position anybody sings about hos, money, and rims. the position's all the emotion, all the angst, all the excitement that became in it? And for everyone who couldn't care a lot less about rap on the prompt, pay interest: you've in reality because you've in reality been uncovered to all the crunk **** that get nonstop continuous airplay for talking about a similar **** over and throughout back, or for only status on the sidelines and shoutin' YEAH and ok!! inspite of in case you nonetheless in no way like hip hop, a minimum of you'll keep in mind that quite some the gamers in the sphere quite have quite of ability and integrity.

The media, music promotors and radio stations hype a certain rapper. It all comes down to sales. Bottom line is dollars. I'm not a bi fan of modern rap. I grew up listening to Grandmaster Flash, Beasties, Ice T, Too Live Crew, etc...got to throw in some Gap Band and Newcleus.

You're not the only one who feels that way.I think rappers like Lil Jon and other crunk rappers have ruined rap music.Back then, it was about actual, raw underground talent, rappers who could actually spit. Those days are gone.Hip-hop has lost its message. All people care about is booty, bling-bling, bitches, and hos, and that corny club synthesizer ****. Nas is right. Hip Hop IS dead.Nobody cares about having real rapping talents. I long for those days again.
As for people thinking rap sucks, that's their opinion, let them talk. I don't think rap sucks, I just think crunk rap and snap music sucks, because Lil Jon made it so.

i hate rap. but the only artist i can respect is RUN DMC and Beastie Boys, they combined talented rock with catchy 80s rap style. other than that, rap shouldn't even be considered music.
oh, and grandmaster flash did have 1 pretty cool song.
